How To: Butterfly Gua Sha Facial Massage

Updated: Feb 27, 2019

Much like the jade roller, the gua sha facial massage tool has been very trendy lately, and I couldn't wait to test one out. I went with the Peace Essential Rose Quartz Gua Sha Butterfly Scraping Massage Tool, and much like the gemstone rollers, there are numerous skin care benefits of gua sha.

The ancient healing technique of gua sha has long been used on the body and traditionally involves vigorous scraping in order to remove negative chi. What it actually does is help to remove toxins by encouraging lymphatic drainage, releases muscle tension, and helps to encourage healing and diminish inflammation by increasing blood flow to a specific area. Thus the gua sha tool has been typically used to treat chronic pain, and it has been known to help with everything from migraines and neck pain to anxiety and peri-menopause.

But what does a gua sha tool exactly do for the face? A lot! Just like a facial roller, or any type of facial massage, using a gua sha tool to massage the face can fight puffiness as well as diminish various signs of aging. The increased blood flow alone aids in healing, cell renewal, firmness, and will give you a healthy glow.

I still love my jade roller for helping with sagging in a few specific areas and for aiding in absorption when it comes to my skincare products, but what I really love about the gua sha butterfly is that it is so much better for massaging the neck, and is a little better for treating puffy eyes. Most of all, I find it very relaxing after a long day of looking at screens.

The gua sha tool is extremely effective at massaging and releasing tension. The combination of a facial massage with the addition of a luxurious gemstone creates a relaxing self-care ritual that is the perfect way to end the workday.

Use the rose quartz to meditate on love and good vibes, the amethyst gua sha to promote intuition and relaxation, and the more traditional jade stone for courage and prosperity. If you've yet to purchase a facial roller, you can get the Peace Essential butterfly gua sha tool and gemstone roller together as a set. Though whether you get the set or purchase a butterfly tool separately, each of their tools come in the prettiest fabric-lined box that is perfect for gift giving or simply for storage.
