How to Get Your Smoothest Skin

Updated: Feb 27, 2019

There are certain products you can use to get smoother skin. Things like body butter and body oil will undoubtedly give you more moisturized skin, but it’s not just what you use but how you use it that can truly help you have your smoothest skin possible. First let's start with the basics.

For smoother, more moisturized skin, exfoliating is a crucial step that shouldn't be skipped. By eliminating dead skin or dry flaky skin, you can encourage cell turnover and make way for new skin before you put on your moisturizer. On the legs especially, it can also help to free ingrown hairs to provide a closer shave. There are numerous skin benefits of using a salt scrub in particular which make it the perfect exfoliant.

Benefits of Exfoliating with A Salt Scrub

  • Improves blood circulation and encourages the release of toxins

  • Can relieve inflammation associated with psoriasis and eczema

  • Helps the skin retain water and moisture

My current favorite is the Lumé Infusions Dead Sea Salt Scrub. In addition to the sea salt, it contains ultra-moisturizing olive oil, detoxifying botanicals like dandelion, licorice and lemongrass for improving skin tone, plantain leaf for treating scars, and soothing ingredients like chamomile and calendula. I especially love that it is naturally scented with lavender, rosemary, and lemon balm.

What to do After Exfoliating

After exfoliating, it's time to moisturize, and when it comes to moisturizing, body butters and body oils are by far the most effective. They can penetrate deep into the dermal layers and offer a host of beneficial nutrients that help to repair, tone, and soothe for younger and smoother looking skin. Oils tend to be my favorite, as they can be infused with herbs and botanicals to provide maximum absorption of beneficial nutrients.

Which Oils Are Best for Your Body

  • Olive Oil - very moisturizing, high in antioxidants and also contains vitamins K and E

  • Avocado Oil - rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids

  • Coconut Oil - high in Lauric Acid, an essential fatty acid that is anti-microbial, balancing, and moisturizing

  • Jojoba Oil - a fast absorbing oil rich in Vitamin A and E

  • Sunflower Seed Oil - rich in vitamins A, C, D, and E

  • Hemp Seed Oil - rich in vitamins A and E, and a good source of omega fatty acids

  • Raspberry Seed Oil - rich in essential fatty acids and high in vitamins A & E

  • Chia Seed Oil - rich in omega fatty acids and a good source of polyphenols and carotenoids

  • Pumpkin Seed Oil - rich in vitamin E, zinc, and omega fatty acids

These nutrient and antioxidant-rich oils help to moisturize, protect, tone, clear, and soothe the skin. All excellent reasons to incorporate them into your beauty routine. My recent favorite is the Lumé Infusions Nourish Body Oil. It contains several of the beneficial oils listed above; including avocado, jojoba, sunflower seed, hemp seed, raspberry seed, chia seed, and pumpkin seed. And just like the Lume scrub, this body oil has the relaxing addition of lavender and chamomile. They're a perfect pair for smoother more beautiful skin and for the ultimate in relaxation.

The Best Way to Exfoliate and Moisturize

Now that you know the best ingredients to use for smoother skin, let's talk about the best ways to use these products. While a salt scrub is perfect for exfoliating skin, for example, you don't need to use one every single day. Exfoliating 2-3 times a week is just the right amount, and even once a week can be sufficient with a good salt scrub.

How often you use a body scrub is just as important as the application. Contrary to popular belief, you should apply the scrub directly onto dry skin for maximum exfoliation and to help the oil penetrate the layers of skin, carrying with it all of the benefits from the botanical ingredients.

Also contrary to popular belief, you shouldn't pat your skin dry before your apply the body oil. For optimum absorption and moisture retention, apply your body oil to warm wet skin.
