Review: Okwuma Originals

Updated: Dec 18, 2019

In the summer of 2018, Okuma, the owner and creator at Okwuma Originals suffered a horrible bout of shingles and was in search of a natural remedy. She'd been making all-natural hair and skin products with shea butter and essential oils for herself, her family and friends for over ten years. With this previous experience, she set off to research natural ways to deal with the debilitating shingles pain, itching, and overall malaise instead of taking prescription medications.

Okwuma combined the anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties of raw Shea butter with organic virgin coconut and grapeseed oil then added the healing power of pure, therapeutic grade essential oils. This evolved into a full line of high-quality natural beauty products and three signature essential oil blends - Revitalizing, Restorative, and Relief. These signature blends are each available in a body scrub, hair and body butter, bath salts, and hair and body oil as well as a few very gift-worthy Home Spa Gift Boxes!

My first experience with Okwuma Originals was the Revitalizing Exfoliating Body Scrub, and I was blown away by the quality and the wonderful scent. Made with real rose petals, it looks as wonderful as it smells. In addition to the dried rose petals, it incorporates the Okwuma Originals Revitalizing blend of geranium, orange, jasmine, rose, peppermint, ylang ylang, and neroli essential oils. It makes for such an uplifting floral and citrus fragrance, while the salt exfoliates; and the shea butter, coconut oil, and Vitamin E moisturize and nourish the skin. Unlike most body scrubs, the scrubs at Okwuma have a large shea butter to salt ratio, and the result is such a luxurious and moisturizing product.

When it comes to the Hair & Body Butters at Okwuma, my absolute favorite is the Relief Muscle & Joint Cream. If you follow me on Instagram, you may know that I struggle with severe chronic back pain, and I've tried several all-natural topical pain relievers.

This one is by far one of my favorites for several reasons. Created with seven essential oils that were specifically combined to reduce inflammation, Okwuma's Relief blend is very effective at relieving pain. It has both a warming and analgesic effect, and unlike some topical pain-relief creams, this one doesn't burn or sting. Best of all, it actually smells good! Most topical pain relievers have a very medicinal scent, but the Okwuma Relief blend includes orange and lavender essential oils for an uplifting, soothing, and pleasant fragrance. If you prefer body oil, you can get any of the Okwuma blends, including the Relief Muscle & Joint blend, in a light-weight Hair & Body Oil.

While I love to pair the Relief Muscle & Joint Cream with their Relief Bath Soaking Salts, I highly recommend the Okwuma Originals Restorative Bath Soaking Salts for a calming and soothing bath. Just like all of the bath salts at Okwuma, it has replenishing Mediterranean Sea salt and relaxing Epsom salt. The Restorative signature blend uses essential oils of cedarwood, bergamot, cypress, frankincense, lavender, tangerine, and chamomile for the ultimate stress-relieving formula. As these essential oils are calming not just in aromatherapy but when applied topically as well, this bath soak is a favorite among customers suffering with eczema and psoriasis.

For gift-giving, the Restorative blend is my top pick, especially in this beautifully packaged Home Spa Gift Box; which comes with a sample pack of the body butters, the soaking bath salts in a beautiful 10oz. glass jar, a loofah sponge, an unscented votive candle, and a 4oz. container of Hair & Body Butter in the blend of your choice. Purchasing a gift box at Okwuma is a wonderful way to give back. Ten percent of the proceeds from the sale of all gift boxes goes to JusticeRain, Inc. - a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing Sustainable and Holistic Works of Justice such as efforts to end human trafficking, providing mental health and criminal justice education, parenting and anger management classes and a variety of other free counseling & coaching services.

If you still aren't sure which blend you'd like to try, or if you'd like to give these wonderful blends as stocking stuffers, you can try all three with the Okwuma Originals Triple Treat Sampler Pack of all three Hair & Body Butters or the Triple Treat Sampler Pack of all three Hair & Body Oils.
